Hi Sunita,

Yes, soreness after massaging a really tight muscle is common. Whether it’s through self massage or from a professional massage therapist a really tight muscle can feel sore after the first few times you work on it. I recommend taking 2-3 days off after a session on a really tight muscle. This allows it a chance to calm down and loosen up.

Don’t stop completely, the soreness is telling you you’re in the right place. It’ll get easier and easier over time.

The real issue is correcting any movement imbalances that have lead to this issue in the first place. I recommend seeing a reputable DPT or Sports Chiropractor to assess your shoulder mobility and recommend possible solutions to clear up the actual cause of the tightness in your shoulder.

It’s important to remember that the tightness is a symptom and not the cause of the problem.

I hope this helps.

I’ve had a muscle injury 4months ago..pec major the dr has said. I have shoulder impingement too. But I feel it could be the minor as pain is near outside of the pec muscle. I also feel tightness around there and radiates to shoulder and neck. Have had deep tissue massages, I tried using a tennis ball to roll over area and it was very sore after so I stopped. Is that normal?

Hi Jake,

It really depends.

It’s possible that your chest pain could be caused by a pec minor issue or there could be another cause.

I have seen tight pec muscles around the sternum that can contribute to a pec minor/shoulder issue.

A great first step is to spend some time using your lacrosse ball and rolling around the muscles on either side of the sternum.

If you feel an improvement in your shoulder issue or if you feel anything radiating to the shoulder than you know you’re on the right path. Work on it for a few minutes every day and see where you are in a few weeks.

If that doesn’t help or only helps a little then I recommend a consult with a reputable DPT.

I have long struggled with pec minor/shoulder/arm/chest pain, but am wondering if the middle sternum pain is a result in poor posture for such a long time.

That’s great news Kat. I’m glad to hear it wasn’t a hear condition. It sounds like your pec minor must’ve been really tight to result in that kind of pain. Did the exercise in the video help?
